When to know your bit needs replacing

Change is a good sign that you need to check or replace your horse's bit.  Whether that is a change in feel down the rein, or whether there is a noticeable difference in your horse's way of going.  Any sudden change in your horse is always a key indicator that something needs addressing.  As well as noticing the subtle changes in our horses we also need to be aware of the physical changes in the kit we use on a daily basis, and as such visible checks of your bits are highly advised.

Here's the science part...

Sprenger bits are made from Sensogan, which is an alloy comprised of Copper, Manganese and Zinc. The Manganese hardens the Copper without influencing the natural oxidisation process, this means that the final product is sturdy but provides the warmth and salivating properties of the Copper that the horse's like. Copper is a soft metal, so if your bit was made entirely from copper, it would wear quickly. Manganese strengthens the copper to ensure that your bit is hard-wearing and long lasting.

You should ensure that you check your bit regularly and should know what you are looking for:
  • All of the joints around the lozenge, single joint and the holes in which the rings slide through should be completely circular - no rough edges or oblong shapes and there should be no cracks/splits in any of the metal.
  • If your bit is plastic or rubber and you can see visible damage - it should be replaced immediately.
  • If you use a Nathe bit from Sprenger, they have a metal core centre. If your horse does chew the bit, the metal core should stop the horse from breaking it in half. However, as soon as you can see the steel centre - stop using the bit and replace it.

If you are in any doubt about the fit or condition of your bit, you should schedule an appointment with one of our horse bit specialists.
